Why Volunteering with Ibu Bumi Orangutan in Sumatra is a Life-Changing Way to Protect Rainforest Biodiversity

In the heart of Sumatra’s lush rainforest, an ecological crisis is quietly unfolding. Home to some of the world’s most endangered species—like the Sumatran orangutan, tiger, and elephant—this biodiverse region is under constant threat from deforestation, illegal logging, and habitat fragmentation.

Enter Ibu Bumi Orangutan, a frontline NGO committed to rainforest conservation and wildlife protection. If you’re passionate about saving endangered species and eager to make a tangible difference, volunteering with Ibu Bumi isn’t just a travel opportunity—it’s a mission.

Protect the Rainforest. Empower Local Communities.

Volunteering with Ibu Bumi Orangutan means working on the ground in Sumatra to:

Reforest native habitats

Monitor and protect wildlife

Support community-based eco-solutions

Assist with sustainable farming initiatives

Rescue wildlife

But digital tools are only half the equation. The real magic happens on the ground—when passionate individuals like you volunteer to protect the very ecosystems that fuel our planet.

The Flora and Fauna You Help Preserve

Sumatra’s rainforest is home to over 15,000 plant species and 200+ mammal species, many of which exist nowhere else on Earth. Every tree you plant, every orangutan you help track, every community you educate—you’re safeguarding the biodiversity of an entire ecosystem.

From rare orchids to elusive clouded leopards, your time and energy will ripple across generations.

Why Now?

The window to protect Sumatra’s rainforest is closing. With deforestation accelerating and climate change compounding the damage, your decision to volunteer today matters more than ever.

Whether you’re a student, a researcher, a digital nomad, or someone seeking meaningful impact, Ibu Bumi Orangutan offers structured, ethical, and impactful volunteer opportunities that align with your values—and contribute to global conservation.

Nora Arriazu

I´.m Nora Arriazu the founder of Ibu Bumi Orangutan NGO and Sumatratrekking community development business.

My goal is to protect the rainforest and its inhabitants.

To this end, I created a local economic development system in which communities participate and from which they derive economic benefits. Furthermore, the entire initiative is structured so that 100% of the proceeds are reinvested in social development, education, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable employment. This project operates as a non-governmental organization, with no personal financial gain involved.

For me, the most important thing is the opportunity to teach, impart skills, and contribute to biodiversity conservation through a sound local economic management system.
