Trekking itineraries
More than your average trek, we take you on unique and genuine expeditions deep into the beautiful forests of North Sumatra. When booking through us, 10% of every activity goes directly to our NGO programs.
Sumatra Trekking operates as the social enterprise arm of the Ibu Bumi Orangutan NGO, driven by a core mission to establish and champion genuine Ecotourism in the Sumatran rainforest.
Our Goal:
Establish Ethical Ecotourism Spots: Create model trekking locations that adhere to the highest standards of ecological and ethical practice.
Empower Local Stakeholders: Provide comprehensive education to local guides, communities, and governments on the principles and profound value of Ecotourism and ethical wildlife management

Why Support Us?
Investing in our Ecotourism programs is a direct investment in the future of Sumatra. This initiative:
Supports Sustainable Community Growth: Helps local communities thrive in harmony with their natural environment.
Protects Critical Nature: Ensures the long-term conservation of the Sumatran Rainforest.
Educates New Generations: Provides essential knowledge and instils conservation values in local youth.
“They organised a 3-day visit to the jungle for us where we could live an incredible and completely wild experience, seeing orangutans and one of the largest existing flowers.
The guides are great, and they organized the camps for us to have dinner and sleep each night. It is also a solidarity project, so the benefits remain in this small and welcoming community.”
— Barbara, Sumatra Trekking guest
Ethical tourism
It is important to know that when we travel, we have to respect the natural environment we visit and the local culture. For this reason, we recommend using organic and environmentally friendly hygiene products, using a reusable water bottle to eliminate plastic waste, and being aware that the forest contains inhabitants who must be respected.
When we visit villages or bathe in their rivers, it is recommended to always wear clothing that does not disturb the local culture. In certain places, the use of bikinis or very small clothes is not permitted.
Necessary equipment for trekking:
This depends on the type and length of trek you will be doing, but in general: a small backpack no bigger than 5k, drinks bottle with filter, mosquito repellent, comfortable, lightweight, long-sleeved, neutral-coloured clothing (without bright colors), non-slip and comfortable mountain footwear, sandals, clothes to rest at night, swimming shorts and towel for bathing in the river, long socks such as football socks (anti-leeches), flashlight, small first aid kit, cap, sunscreen.
Conditions of booking
If you book an activity with us, you must pay in advance by at least 1 week.
If you change your mind and end up not doing the activity, you must notify us one week in advance, not two days before. If you have paid for your reservation and change your mind by notifying us one week in advance, your money will be refunded, minus shipping taxes.
If you cancel one day before, your money will not be refunded.
Rules of respect when trekking with us:
It is forbidden to get too close to wildlife, feeding wildlife is prohibited, and please always listen to your guide in the forest to avoid problems.
Respect for wildlife and the forest is as essential as respect for the community you visit and its culture.
